I went to the Annie Awards tonight with a bunch of people from the UCLA Animation Workshop.
Not surprisingly, The Incredibles totally swept the Animated Feature awards. Brad Bird won 3 awards, for Best Writing, Best Directing and Best Voice Acting, which was classic cuz he only did the voice of Edna as a goof, so Brad said he felt like he was "getting away with something" by winning an award that should've gone to "real voice actors."
Aside from seeing my favorite film of 2004 (animated or otherwise) win a truckload of awards, the best part of the show was the host, Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants. I got to meet Tom Kenny in person about a year of so ago at an in-store appearance of Cartoon Network voice actors, including all the Powerpuff Girls and Phil LaMarr (Samurai Jack).
Tom Kenny was an absolute laugh riot as the host of the Annies. He started off the show with a hilarious monologue about the recent nonsense regarding Dr. James Dobson and the speculation that SpongeBob SquarePants is gay. Kenny pointed out that it's all really irrelevant because SpongeBob SquarePants is:
- Imaginary
- A kid*
- Asexual (cuz he's a freaking sponge!!!)
Oh ya, besides all the cool Animation Industry people there, Stan Lee was there to present the Best Animated Feature award. The highlight of the evening for me was watching James go up to Stan Lee before the show and shake his hand. James' face was bright bright red when he slinked back over to us.
On second thought, my favorite moment was when the whole audience blushed as Tom Kenny pulled down his pants and ran across the stage in his underwear. F
ing genius.
* I did a quick Google search of how old is spongebob and discovered that SpongeBob's B-day is July 14, 1986, which means he's no longer a "kid" anymore but mentally he's definitely still infantile)
